Why Are Travel Vaccinations Important?

What to Expect During Your Travel Health Consultation

Your appointment lasts around 20 minutes and costs £15, which comes off the price of your first vaccine. You can book online or call 01634 404142.

We start with your itinerary. The pharmacist asks which countries and regions you're visiting, your dates, where you're staying, and what you plan to do while you're there.

These details matter more than the destination alone. Two weeks in a Goa resort carries different risks from a month backpacking through rural Rajasthan in monsoon season.

Next comes your health history: existing conditions, regular medicines, allergies, pregnancy, and any previous reactions to vaccines. We also check what you've already had, so you aren't paying for a dose you don't need.

You'll then get a clear plan. We distinguish between what a country requires and our recommendations. We also confirm costs and explain any doses that should be spaced over weeks.

Where it's suitable, your vaccines are given in the same visit. Nothing is administered before you've agreed to it.

We finish with the practical side: antimalarial options, insect bite prevention, food and water safety, and your certificates and record card before you leave.

How Early Should You Get Travel Vaccines?

Book your appointment 6 to 8 weeks before departure. That gives your immune system time to respond and leaves room for courses that need more than one dose.

Several vaccines take longer than most travellers expect. Rabies is usually three doses over 21 to 28 days, though a two-dose course a week apart is enough for most short trips. Japanese encephalitis needs two doses over 28 days, and hepatitis B needs three doses over six months on the standard schedule, or an accelerated schedule at 0, 7, and 21 days with a booster at 12 months.

Yellow fever has its own rule. The international certificate is valid only 10 days after vaccination. So, if your appointment is late, you might not be able to enter a country that checks at the border. Once issued, the certificate lasts for life.

Antimalarial tablets have their own start dates as well. Some are taken a couple of days before you arrive, while others need to be started two or three weeks ahead.

If you're travelling sooner than that, don't write it off. Many vaccines still give worthwhile protection when given closer to departure, and we hold same-week slots for last-minute trips.

What to Bring to Your Travel Clinic Appointment

Bring your travel details first. A printed or on-screen itinerary shows countries, regions, dates, and accommodation. This helps the pharmacist assess your risk effectively.

Bring any vaccination records you have. A child's red book, a printout from your GP, your NHS app record, or an old yellow fever certificate all help us avoid repeating doses.

Bring a list of your current medicines, including anything bought over the counter. Tell us about ongoing conditions, allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or treatments that affect your immune system.

If you need a yellow fever certificate, bring your passport. The name on your certificate has to match your travel documents exactly, and border staff do check.

Children are welcome, and family bookings can be made in one appointment. A parent or legal guardian needs to attend to give consent.

Finally, bring a payment method for the day. The £15 consultation fee is redeemed against your first vaccine, so most travellers pay nothing extra for the advice.
