What is Hepatitis A and why vaccinate

Hepatitis A is a serious liver infection spread through contaminated food and water. The vaccine is your best protection, especially if you're travelling to high-risk areas.

Hepatitis A affects the liver and causes symptoms including fever, tiredness, jaundice and abdominal pain. It spreads through poor sanitation and contaminated water, making it common in areas with limited hygiene standards. The infection can last several weeks and occasionally cause serious complications.

The Hepatitis A vaccine works by building immunity against the virus before you travel. It's safe, effective and has been used successfully for decades. Two doses, given six months apart, provide long-lasting protection that typically lasts 10 years or more. Children from 12 months old can receive the vaccine, making it suitable for families planning trips abroad.

You should consider vaccination if you're travelling to Africa, Asia, Central or South America, the Middle East, or Eastern Europe. Even short trips to areas with lower sanitation standards put you at risk. The vaccine is also recommended if you have chronic liver disease or work in healthcare or food preparation.

What to expect from your appointment

Your Hepatitis A vaccination appointment at Chatham Pharmacy is straightforward and takes about 15 minutes. We'll check your health history, answer your questions and administer the vaccine.

When you arrive at our Chatham pharmacy, our team will welcome you and ask about your travel plans and medical history. We need to know about any allergies, current medications and whether you have a weakened immune system. This helps us ensure the vaccine is right for you and identify the best timing for your doses.

Our experienced pharmacist will discuss what to expect from the vaccine and answer any concerns. The injection itself is quick and given into the upper arm. Most people experience minimal discomfort. You can return to your normal activities straight away, though we recommend resting for the remainder of the day if possible.

After your vaccination, we'll give you a record card showing what you've received and when your second dose is due. We'll book your follow-up appointment for six months later to complete your protection. If you experience any unusual symptoms after leaving, contact us or your GP for advice.
