Do you really need vaccines for Turkey?

Turkey has no compulsory vaccine requirements for UK travellers. However, hepatitis A remains a significant risk, particularly for anyone eating outside of all-inclusive resorts. Typhoid is also recommended for rural travel or longer stays.

The good news is that Turkey’s vaccine requirements are straightforward: single-dose injections that are effective within days. Even last-minute travellers can be protected.

Food and water safety in Turkey

Tap water is not safe to drink in most Turkish cities and towns. Hotels and restaurants use filtered or bottled water for cooking, but street vendors and rural areas may not. Stick to sealed bottles, avoid ice of unknown origin, and choose busy restaurants with high turnover.

Sun, heat and swimming

Southern Turkey, the Aegean coast and Cappadocia all reach 40C+ in summer. Sunburn and heat exhaustion are among the most common health issues for British tourists. SPF 50+, shade at midday, and 2+ litres of water daily.

Eastern Turkey and rural travel

If you are venturing beyond the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts into eastern or rural Turkey, additional precautions apply. Rabies pre-exposure may be worth considering, and hepatitis B becomes more relevant for longer stays. Medical facilities in rural areas are limited.

Travelling to Turkey for surgery, dental work or a hair transplant

Turkey is one of the biggest destinations in the world for medical and dental tourism, and a large number of the travellers we see are going for a procedure rather than a holiday. The health advice is different, and it starts with hepatitis B. Any procedure that breaks the skin, including dental work, cosmetic surgery and hair transplants, carries a bloodborne virus risk, and hepatitis B vaccination is the one measure entirely within your control.

Tetanus cover should be current, and a tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster is a single dose if your last one was more than ten years ago. It is also worth planning the aftercare before you go: what dressings you will need, what painkillers you can carry, how you will manage the flight home, and who you will see in Medway if something is not healing as expected.

We are not here to talk you out of it, and we will not lecture you. We will tell you what the clinic abroad may not: bring the written treatment plan to your consultation, get the name of any antibiotic you are prescribed, and come and see us on New Road when you are back if you have any concern at all about a wound.
