What is this service

A blood pressure check is a quick, free NHS service that measures how hard your blood is pushing against your artery walls.

Your blood pressure is recorded as two numbers. The top number, called systolic pressure, measures the force when your heart beats. The bottom number, called diastolic pressure, measures the force when your heart rests between beats. Normal blood pressure is generally around 120/80 or lower.

At Chatham Pharmacy in Chatham, Kent, our trained professionals use modern equipment to take your reading in just a few minutes. We'll explain your results clearly and discuss what they mean for your health. This simple check can help detect high blood pressure early, before it causes problems like heart disease or stroke.

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why regular checks are so important. Many people in Medway and across Kent don't realise their blood pressure is raised until they have it checked. Our free service makes it easy to stay on top of your cardiovascular health without any cost or fuss.

PHARMACIST TIPAvoid caffeine and nicotine for 30 minutes before your check, and try to sit calmly for at least 5 minutes beforehand. This helps ensure your reading is as accurate as possible.
Important to know
A single reading doesn't diagnose high blood pressure. We recommend regular checks to identify patterns.
If your reading is very high or you experience chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath, seek medical help immediately.
Always discuss your results with your GP if you're concerned or if readings remain consistently high.
I was shocked to find out my blood pressure was high. The team at Chatham Pharmacy explained everything clearly and helped me understand what to do next. Such a helpful service.
πŸ“‹Your results explainedWe'll discuss what your numbers mean and whether any follow-up is needed.
πŸ’¬Practical adviceGet tips on lifestyle changes that can help maintain healthy blood pressure.
πŸ“…Regular monitoringWe recommend checks every 1 to 5 years depending on your results and health.

What to expect

Our blood pressure checks are straightforward and stress-free, taking just a few minutes from start to finish.

When you arrive at Chatham Pharmacy, our team will welcome you and explain what to expect. You'll sit comfortably with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor. We'll place a soft cuff around your upper arm, which will gently tighten as the equipment takes your reading. You'll feel slight pressure but no pain.

The whole process typically takes 3 to 5 minutes. Once we have your reading, we'll show you the two numbers and explain what they mean. If your blood pressure is healthy, we'll reassure you and discuss how often you should have it checked. If it's raised, we'll talk through what this means and suggest next steps, such as lifestyle changes or visiting your GP.

Before your appointment, try to rest for at least 5 minutes. Avoid caffeine, nicotine and strenuous exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, as these can temporarily raise your blood pressure. Wear loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to your upper arm. If you've had a stressful journey or feel anxious, let us know and we can give you extra time to relax.

We keep a record of your reading so you can track changes over time. If you'd like to monitor your blood pressure regularly, we recommend visiting every 1 to 5 years depending on your initial results and any health concerns. You can book appointments online or simply pop in during our opening hours.

PHARMACIST TIPKeep a simple diary of your blood pressure readings if you have checks elsewhere too. This helps you and your GP spot patterns and make informed decisions about your health.
What to avoid before your check
Don't have caffeine, alcohol or nicotine for at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
Avoid strenuous exercise or physical activity in the hour before your check.
Try not to rush or feel stressed when arriving. Give yourself time to settle and relax.
Empty your bladder before the check, as a full bladder can slightly raise blood pressure readings.
I was nervous about having my blood pressure checked, but the team at Chatham Pharmacy made me feel completely at ease. They took time to explain everything and answered all my questions.
βœ…Healthy readingContinue your current lifestyle and have checks every 3 to 5 years.
⚠️Slightly raisedMake lifestyle changes and recheck in 3 to 6 months. Consider seeing your GP.
