How it works

How Mounjaro works in the body

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a medicine that mimics two natural gut hormones called GIP and GLP-1. These hormones help regulate appetite and blood sugar, so the medicine can help you feel fuller sooner and reduce the urge to snack between meals. It is prescribed alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity, and only after a clinical assessment confirms it is suitable for you.

Reduces appetite

Helps you feel satisfied with smaller portions by acting on appetite signals in the brain.

Slows digestion

Food leaves the stomach more slowly, which extends the feeling of fullness after eating.

Lowers food cravings

Many people notice fewer thoughts about food and less desire for high calorie snacks.

Supports steadier blood sugar

Helps the body respond better to insulin, keeping blood sugar levels more stable.

Your dose is increased gradually

Every dose increase is checked at a face-to-face review with our prescriber before it is issued.

  1. WEEKS 1 TO 42.5mg

A starting dose to let your body adjust. This dose is for treatment initiation and is not intended for ongoing weight management.

  2. WEEKS 5 TO 85mg

The first maintenance dose, used if the starting dose has been well tolerated.

  3. WEEKS 9 TO 127.5mg

A further step up, considered if more support is needed and side effects remain manageable.

  4. WEEKS 13 TO 1610mg

A higher maintenance dose used for some patients based on response and tolerability.

  5. WEEKS 17 TO 2012.5mg

A further increase considered only if needed and agreed at your review.

  6. WEEK 21 ONWARDS15mg

The highest available dose, used only where clinically appropriate.

Side effects

Possible side effects, explained honestly

Most people who take Mounjaro experience mild to moderate side effects, particularly while the dose is being increased. These often settle as your body adjusts.

Common

nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, mild stomach discomfort, reduced appetite, tiredness

Eating smaller, plainer meals and staying well hydrated can help ease these symptoms.

Less common

vomiting, heartburn, bloating, taste changes, hair thinning

Please mention these at your next review so we can check whether any adjustment is needed.

Seek help promptly

severe or persistent abdominal pain, signs of an allergic reaction, symptoms of pancreatitis, signs of gallbladder problems, severe vomiting or dehydration

Stop taking Mounjaro and call the pharmacy or 111 out of hours if you experience any of these.

You can report suspected side effects to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and full details are available in the patient information leaflet supplied with your medicine.

Deciding between treatments

Not sure Mounjaro is the right fit?

Mounjaro is one of several weight management treatments we offer, and it may not suit everyone. During your consultation, our team can talk through the alternatives available and help you understand the differences, so you can make an informed choice based on your health and goals rather than guesswork.

What is Mounjaro and who is it for?

Mounjaro is a prescription-only injectable medicine used to support weight management alongside a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) works by mimicking natural hormones that help regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, helping you feel fuller for longer and reducing overall food intake.

It is available in a range of doses, from 2.5mg up to 15mg, so treatment can be tailored to your individual needs and adjusted gradually under clinical supervision.

Whether Mounjaro is suitable for you depends on your medical history, current health, and goals. Every request is reviewed by one of our prescribers before treatment begins, and it is never supplied without a proper consultation.

Treatment is always personalised, never a one size fits all approach.

Using Mounjaro safely

Mounjaro is generally well tolerated, but like all medicines it needs to be used carefully and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

You will be shown how to store, prepare and administer your injection correctly, and given clear guidance on what to do if you feel unwell.

Some people experience mild digestive side effects, particularly when starting treatment or increasing their dose. Our pharmacist will talk you through what to expect and when to seek advice.

It is important to tell us about any other medicines, supplements or health conditions you have, as these can affect whether Mounjaro is suitable and how your dose is managed.

PHARMACIST TIPKeep your injection pens refrigerated until first use, and always check the expiry date before administering a dose.
Safety checks happen at every step, not just at the first appointment.

Eating and lifestyle on Mounjaro

Mounjaro works best as part of a wider approach that includes balanced eating and regular activity, rather than as a standalone solution.

Because Mounjaro can reduce appetite significantly, it is important to still eat regular, nutritious meals to support your energy levels and overall health.

Staying well hydrated and eating slowly can help manage any digestive discomfort, especially in the early weeks of treatment.

Gentle, consistent physical activity alongside your prescribed diet plan can support steady, sustainable progress rather than relying on the medicine alone.

PHARMACIST TIPTry smaller, more frequent meals if you notice your appetite has reduced considerably, to help maintain steady energy throughout the day.
Small, sustainable habits alongside treatment tend to make the biggest difference.

Tracking your progress at reviews

Regular reviews with our team allow us to monitor how you are responding to Mounjaro and adjust your plan if needed.

At each review, we will check in on your weight, general wellbeing and any side effects you may have experienced since your last appointment.

This is also a good opportunity to discuss whether your current dose remains appropriate, or whether a change should be considered based on your progress and how you are feeling.

We encourage open, honest conversations at every review, as this helps us support you safely and effectively throughout your treatment journey.

PHARMACIST TIPKeep a simple note of your weight and how you're feeling between appointments, it makes reviews quicker and more useful.
Reviews are about supporting you, not just ticking a box.

Coming off Mounjaro

If and when it is time to stop Mounjaro, this should always be planned with your prescriber rather than done suddenly on your own.

Your prescriber will talk to you about the reasons for stopping, whether that is reaching your goal, side effects, or a change in your circumstances.

Maintaining the eating and activity habits you have built during treatment can help support your progress after stopping Mounjaro.

We remain available for advice and support after treatment ends, and can discuss whether any further follow up or ongoing care would be helpful for you.

PHARMACIST TIPBook a final review before stopping so we can agree a clear plan together and answer any questions you have.
Stopping treatment is a conversation, not a decision made alone.
