Wegovy has two storage states. Before your first injection, the pen belongs in the fridge at 2°C to 8°C, kept in its carton and away from the cooling element at the back.
Once you take that first dose, the pen can stay in the fridge or sit at room temperature below 30°C, and it must be binned six weeks after first use even if liquid remains. Wegovy tablets are the exception. They need no fridge at all, just the original blister and carton, kept away from damp and light.

Why Wegovy Needs Careful Storage
Semaglutide is a peptide, closer in behaviour to insulin than to a paracetamol tablet. Heat and ice both damage the molecule, and the damage is permanent.
The difficult part is that a heat damaged pen usually looks completely normal. There is no smell, no colour change and no warning. You would only notice through weeks of weight loss that never quite arrives.
Light does its own slow damage, which is why the leaflet asks you to keep the cap on and the pen in its box between doses.
Storing Wegovy Before First Use
Fridge, 2°C to 8°C. A middle shelf is the safest spot in most home fridges.
Avoid the back wall and the cooling element, because that area often dips below zero. The door is the opposite problem, warming every time someone reaches for the milk.
Keep the pen inside its outer carton with the cap on. Stored properly, an unused pen lasts until the expiry date printed on the pen label and the box.
One thing worth checking at home: a cheap fridge thermometer. Plenty of household fridges run at 1°C or colder, and patients often only find out after a pen has already frozen.
The UK leaflet gives no room temperature allowance for a pen you have not started yet. American labels do mention 28 days, which causes a lot of confusion online. If your unopened pen has been left out, ring us before you inject it.
Storing Your Wegovy Pen Once You've Started It
After your first injection, the rules relax. The pen can live in the fridge or anywhere below 30°C, and you have six weeks from that first dose.
Each FlexTouch pen holds four weekly doses, so normal use takes four weeks. The extra fortnight is built in leeway, not an invitation to stretch the pen.
Write the date of your first injection on the carton. Six weeks is easy to lose track of when a pen has been in and out of a fridge shelf behind the butter.
Take the needle off straight after every dose and put the cap back on. Never store the pen with a needle attached, as it lets medicine leak out and air creep in.
The 7.2 mg dose works differently. It comes as four single-use pens, one per week, each holding the full dose in one injection. Store them in the fridge like any unused pen, and dispose of each one straight after use rather than keeping it. If you started on 7.2 mg before June 2026 you may have been given three 2.4 mg pens per dose instead, check which format you have before you inject.
How Long Can Wegovy Be Left Out of the Fridge?
Six weeks total for a pen in use, as long as it stays below 30°C. That is the whole in use life, not six extra weeks on top of fridge time.
A typical British living room sits around 18°C to 22°C, so ordinary indoor storage is not the problem. The risk is in specific spots: a car dashboard, a conservatory, a sunny windowsill, the shelf above a radiator, or a handbag on a hot day.
Kent hit the low thirties in the summer of 2025, and we had several patients bring pens in after leaving them in a parked car. If a pen has been above 30°C at any point, it should not be used, whatever it looks like.
Left out overnight in a cool kitchen after you have started the pen? That is inside the rules. Left in a car boot in August? Bring it in and speak to a pharmacist.
Travelling With Your Wegovy Pen
Pens go in hand luggage, never in the hold. Hold temperatures drop well below freezing, and lost baggage takes your treatment with it.
Use an insulated cool bag with a gel pack, with a layer of cloth between the pack and the pen. Direct contact with a frozen block can freeze the solution.
Carry your pharmacy label or a copy of your prescription. Most of our Chatham patients fly from Gatwick or Heathrow, and airport security rarely questions a labelled medicine with needles when the paperwork is there.
Hotel minibar fridges are worth a mention. They often have no thermostat and freeze anything pushed to the back, so a pen in use is usually safer at room temperature in the wardrobe.
Signs Your Wegovy Pen Should Not Be Used
Look through the window before every injection. The liquid should be clear and colourless.
Do not use the pen if you see any of the following:
Cloudiness, discolouration or floating particles
Any sign the pen has frozen, even if it has thawed and looks normal again
Storage above 30°C or a spell in direct sunlight
The expiry date on the pen label has passed
More than six weeks since your first injection with that pen
A cracked or leaking pen, or one that has taken a hard knock
No drop of liquid at the needle tip after two flow checks and a needle change
When in doubt, do not inject it. A wasted pen is a nuisance, a wasted month of treatment is worse.
How to Dispose of Wegovy Pens and Needles Safely
Needles go into a sharps bin immediately after each injection, using the outer cap to guide the needle off. Never try to put the inner cap back on.
Your Wegovy pack comes with four NovoFine Plus needles. Sharps bins are available from us, and Medway Council can advise on collection or drop off for full bins.
Loose needles must never go in the household bin, the recycling or the toilet. Bin collection staff get needlestick injuries every year from exactly this.
Once the pen is empty, remove the needle and dispose of the pen as your pharmacist advises. The plastic cap and the empty carton are fine in normal household waste.
Storage Requirements for Wegovy Pills
The tablet form is newly licensed in the UK. Ask us whether it is something we can supply for you before planning around it.
Wegovy is now also licensed in the UK as a daily tablet, in 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg strengths. Storage is far simpler than the pen, though not quite as simple as patients assume.
Keep the tablets in the original blister and carton, out of light and moisture. No special temperature conditions apply.
Do You Need to Put Wegovy Pills in the Fridge?
No. A fridge is the wrong place for them, since the damp environment works against a tablet designed to stay dry.
Skip the bathroom cabinet too, along with the shelf above the kettle. Steam is the main enemy here.
One habit worth breaking: do not decant Wegovy tablets into a weekly pill organiser. The foil blister is doing a job, and a plastic compartment does not replace it.
Why Pill Storage Differs From Injections
The pen holds a sterile liquid protein, so it needs cold to stay stable and a sealed system to stay sterile. Warmth ruins it, and once the seal is broken the clock starts.
The tablet has no water in it and no sterility to protect. Its weak point is humidity rather than heat, which is why it sits in a foil blister instead of a fridge.
Wegovy tablets also contain an absorption enhancer that helps semaglutide cross the stomach lining. Moisture interferes with that, so a damaged blister is a genuine reason to return the pack.
