Chickenpox Vaccine Overview

Protect yourself or your family from chickenpox with our private vaccination service at Chatham Pharmacy. The chickenpox vaccine is a safe and effective way to prevent this highly contagious viral infection.

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella zoster virus and spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets or direct contact with the characteristic fluid-filled blisters. While many people recover without serious complications, chickenpox can lead to severe outcomes including bacterial infections, pneumonia, and encephalitis, particularly in adults and immunocompromised individuals.

The varicella vaccine offers robust protection against infection. Most people who receive the vaccine develop immunity and either avoid chickenpox entirely or experience a much milder form of the illness if exposed. At Chatham Pharmacy, we provide the Varivax vaccine, which has been safely used for decades across the UK and worldwide.

PHARMACIST TIPIf you're unsure whether you've had chickenpox or been vaccinated before, our pharmacists can discuss your medical history and advise whether vaccination is right for you. Many adults born before the 1990s may not have received the vaccine on the NHS.

Who Should Have It

The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for anyone without proven immunity to varicella zoster virus. This includes those who have never had chickenpox or have no documented vaccination history.

Children aged 12 months and over can receive the vaccine. It's particularly important for children attending school or nursery, as chickenpox spreads easily in these settings. Two doses, given 4 to 8 weeks apart, are needed for complete protection.

Adults who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine should consider vaccination, especially if they work in healthcare, education, or childcare, or if they live with someone who is immunocompromised. Pregnant women should not receive the vaccine but may benefit from vaccination planning before conception.

People with certain medical conditions, those taking immunosuppressive medications, or with severe allergies to any vaccine component should discuss suitability with our pharmacists before proceeding.

Who Cannot Have This Vaccine
Pregnant women (vaccination should be delayed until after pregnancy)
People with severe allergies to any vaccine ingredient
Those with untreated tuberculosis
Severely immunocompromised individuals (discuss with your doctor first)
Anyone with a fever or acute illness (postpone vaccination until recovered)

What to Expect

Our vaccination service at Chatham Pharmacy is straightforward, quick, and delivered by our experienced pharmacy team. We'll ensure you're comfortable and well-informed throughout the process.

When you arrive for your appointment, our pharmacist will review your medical history, answer any questions, and confirm the vaccine is suitable for you. The injection itself takes just a few seconds and is administered into the upper arm muscle.

Most people experience no side effects or only mild ones. Common reactions include soreness, redness, or slight swelling at the injection site, and occasionally a mild fever or rash 2 to 3 weeks after vaccination. These effects are temporary and indicate your immune system is responding.

You'll need to return for a second dose 4 to 8 weeks after your first injection to achieve full immunity. We'll book this appointment for you before you leave. After vaccination, you can resume normal activities immediately, though some people prefer to rest if they experience mild discomfort.

πŸ“‹Before Your AppointmentBring any medical records or vaccination history you have. Wear loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access to your upper arm.
⏱️During Your VisitAllow 15 to 20 minutes for your appointment. Our pharmacist will discuss any concerns and administer the vaccine.
βœ“After VaccinationStay in the pharmacy for 5 to 10 minutes to ensure you feel well. Book your second dose appointment before leaving.
