At Chatham Pharmacy on New Road, our trained ear care team uses microsuction to clear ear wax safely and comfortably. There is no water involved, no syringing and no mess. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes and most people walk out hearing noticeably better straight away. Microsuction is the method recommended by NICE clinical guidelines as the first choice for ear wax removal when trained staff and equipment are available. It uses a small sterile suction tip under bright magnification to gently lift wax out of the ear canal. The clinician can see exactly what they are doing the entire time. Our ear wax removal service is overseen by Mandeep Sandhu, our GPhC-registered superintendent pharmacist. Every procedure is carried out by a team member who has completed dedicated microsuction training and holds professional indemnity cover. Microsuction works best when the wax has been softened in the days leading up to the appointment. Hard wax can be more uncomfortable to remove, and sometimes it is hard to remove all of it in one session.
- Use olive oil drops
It is important that the wax is soft to make the procedure as comfortable and effective as possible. We recommend applying a few drops of olive oil into each ear that is affected by earwax. - Apply consistently for 5 days
Ideally this procedure should be performed twice daily for a period of 5 days running up to your appointment. - Relax and get ready

Do I need to soften the wax before my appointment?
We recommend olive oil drops twice a day for three to five days before you come in. It softens the wax and makes the whole thing quicker. If you have not had time to prepare, let us know and we can apply drops in clinic before we start.
How much does ear wax removal cost at Chatham Pharmacy?
It is £49 for one ear or both ears. If we check your ears and there is no wax to remove, a £25 consultation fee applies. No GP referral is needed.
How long does the appointment take?
About 15 to 20 minutes from start to finish, including the ear examination and aftercare chat. You can carry on with your day straight afterwards.
What is microsuction ear wax removal?
Microsuction uses a small sterile suction tip and bright magnification to gently lift wax out of the ear canal. It is a dry procedure with no water or syringing. The clinician can see inside the ear the entire time, making it safer than older methods.
Does microsuction hurt?
Most people feel a mild tickle or gentle pulling and not much else. When we ask patients to rate it, the typical answer is about two out of ten for discomfort. The suction unit makes a quiet buzzing noise but it is not painful.
